Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT): A General Overview

Marriage and Family Therapists or Marriage and Family Counselors typically have received training that primarily focuses on understanding the individual in the context of their family and other "systems." While this can be a very different approach to therapy and training therapists, there are also many similarities. It is also important to remember that there is a great range of variance in these therapist and training programs, so it is always important to consider the particular professional more than their degree.

Are Marriage and Family Therapists Trained to Work with Individuals?

Yes! Don't let their title fool you. Many of these individuals may primarily work with families and couples, but they have also received training to work with individuals. In fact, some marriage and family work primarily with individuals.

Are Other Types of Therapists and Counselors Not Trained to Deal with Family, Couple, or Marital Issues?

Yes! Most states require that you also received training in working with families and couples to be licensed as a psychology or counselor. Some of these other therapists prefer to not work with families and couples or to only work with them on a limited basis. In general, if you are looking for a therapist for family, couple, or marital therapy it is more important to look at the training and background of the particular therapist instead of their degree.
